Handyman insurance explained

Handymen often work across a mix of properties and jobs. You might be helping a homeowner with repairs, carrying out maintenance work for a landlord or completing small projects for a business customer.

Because the work can change from one job to the next, having the right cover options in place can help protect your business against unforeseen costs if something goes wrong.

Here’s some of what can be included:

Public liability insurance

Handyman public liability insurance can protect your business if a customer or member of the public claims they suffered an injury or property damage because of your work.

Examples might include:

  • A customer being injured due to you carrying out work

  • Accidental damage to a customer's property

  • An incident involving your tools or equipment

  • A claim linked to work carried out at a customer's premises

We offer public liability insurance for handymen with cover up to £5 million across our packages.

Employers’ liability insurance

If you employ staff, employers' liability insurance may be required by law in certain circumstances.

This cover is separate from public liability insurance and can protect your business if an employee suffers a work-related injury or illness and your business is found legally liable.

We offer employers' liability insurance up to £10 million across our handyman insurance packages.

Professional indemnity insurance

Some handymen provide advice, recommendations or specifications as part of their work.

Professional indemnity insurance can provide protection if a customer alleges those professional services caused them financial loss.

We include professional indemnity insurance within our Classic and Plus policies, with cover available up to £100,000.

Tools cover

Handymen often rely on a range of tools to complete odd jobs.

Our tools cover can provide protection for insured tools and equipment up to £15,000, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Cover can apply to handheld powered and non-powered portable tools, as well as laptops and tablets used for business purposes.

Temporary total disablement benefit

If an insured person is unable to work following a covered injury, our Plus policy includes temporary total disablement benefit, which can provide a weekly income of up to £600, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Why handymen need insurance?

Handymen take on all sorts of jobs, often working directly in customers' homes, rental properties and commercial premises.

You could be moving equipment around a customer's property, working alongside other contractors or completing maintenance tasks in busy areas. Even straightforward jobs can come with unexpected risks.

Handyman insurance can help protect your business against unforeseen costs if an insured event results in a claim. Depending on the cover you select, you can also include protection for employees, professional services and your tools.

Whether you're a self-employed handyman working alone or run a small handyman business with employees, we offer cover options designed around the way you work.

Common risks faced by handymen

Handyman work can vary from one day to the next. A job that looks simple at first can still involve risks for you, your customers and your business.

Here are some situations where handyman insurance may provide protection:

1. A customer claims their property was damaged

Working in someone else's home means you're often surrounded by valuable items, fixtures and fittings.

If your work accidentally damages third-party property, public liability insurance may provide protection against claims for property damage.

2. Someone is injured while you're working

Customers or visitors may be nearby while you carry out repairs or maintenance work.

If someone suffers an injury because of your work, public liability insurance may provide protection against claims involving third-party injury.

 3. Your tools are stolen

As a handyman, you’ll often be carrying tools between different jobs.

If insured tools or equipment are stolen from a locked vehicle, tools cover may provide protection, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

5. A customer alleges financial loss

A customer may claim that advice, recommendations or specifications provided by your business caused them financial loss.

Professional indemnity insurance may provide protection for claims relating to professional advice or services, subject to the policy terms and conditions.
