Cleaner insurance explained

Cleaner insurance is a collection of covers designed to help protect cleaning businesses against common risks.

Public liability insurance can help protect your business against costs that might arise from injury to third parties and damage to third party property. Depending on your business, additional cover options may also be available for employees, tools and professional services.

Public liability insurance

A client or member of the public slips shortly after an area has been cleaned and suffers an injury. Public liability insurance can help cover the costs associated with a claim for injury.

Employers’ liability insurance

If you employ staff, employers' liability insurance may be required by law in certain circumstances.

Employers' liability insurance can be included in all TDI cleaner’s insurance packages, with up to £10 million of cover available.

Professional indemnity insurance

Professional indemnity insurance can provide protection if a customer alleges financial loss because of professional advice or recommendations you have provided.

Professional indemnity cover is included within Classic and Plus policies.

Cover is available up to £100,000.

Tools cover

Cleaning businesses often rely on portable tools and equipment to carry out their work.

Tools cover starts at £1,000 and can be increased up to £15,000.

Cover can apply to handheld powered and non-powered portable tools, as well as laptops and tablets used for business purposes, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Temporary total disablement benefit

Available within Plus policies, Temporary Total Disablement Benefit can provide up to £600 per week if an insured person is unable to work due to a covered injury, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Why cleaners need insurance

Cleaning businesses work in homes, offices, retail premises and commercial buildings every day. Even with care and attention, accidents can happen.

A customer could slip on a recently cleaned floor. Equipment could be stolen between jobs. A third party could claim your work caused damage to their property. Public liability insurance can help protect your business from unforeseen costs if an insured event leads to a successful claim against you.

Depending on the cover you select, cleaner insurance can also include protection for employees, tools, professional advice and loss of income following certain injuries.

Whether you're self-employed or run a growing cleaning company, cleaner insurance can help support your business cash flow and finances in the event of a claim.

Common risks faced by cleaners

No two working days are exactly the same. Cleaners regularly work around members of the public, customers, valuable property and specialist cleaning products.

Here are some situations where cleaner insurance can help:

1. A customer slips on a wet floor

A client or member of the public slips shortly after an area has been cleaned and suffers an injury. Public liability insurance can help cover the costs associated with a claim for injury.

2. Accidental damage to third-party property

While carrying out cleaning work, a fixture, fitting or other third-party property is accidentally damaged. Public liability insurance can help cover claims relating to accidental damage to third-party property.

Damage to the item, surface or property being worked on is not covered. For example, if the wrong cleaning product damages a carpet while it is being cleaned, this would not be covered.

3. Theft of tools and equipment

Portable tools or equipment used as part of your cleaning business are stolen from a locked vehicle. Tools cover can help support the cost of replacing insured items.

4. Employee injury

If you employ staff and a team member is injured while working, employers' liability insurance may provide protection against claims brought by employees.

5. Alleged financial loss

A customer claims your work caused financial loss to their business. Third Party Financial Loss cover can provide protection in certain circumstances.
