The emotional impact of tool theft and what may help

Having your tools stolen can affect more than your working day. The frustration, worry and loss of confidence can sometimes stay with you long after you're back on the job. But if you're struggling with the impact, support is available.

The emotional impact of tool theft and what may help

Discovering that someone's broken into your van or workshop and stolen your tools is bad enough. Then there are customers to update, jobs to rearrange and equipment to replace.

Even in cases where insurance covers the cost of replacing stolen tools, the emotional impact isn't always so straightforward.

It's not just about the tools

Your tools represent years of investment in your trade. Some might have been with you since your apprenticeship days. And you've likely acquired specialist kit as your trade business has grown.

Having them stolen can leave you angry, frustrated or questioning whether you could have done anything differently.

Research by TradeBrain found that 39% of tradespeople surveyed reported a strong impact on their mental health following tool theft, rising to 66% among self-employed respondents.

And it's not necessarily just the immediate upset. You might find yourself checking the van more often, worrying about another theft or feeling less secure somewhere you've parked or stored your equipment for years.

Not everyone reacts in the same way, but those feelings can be difficult to shake off.

Back at work doesn't always mean back to normal

When you've got a business to run, there's plenty demanding your attention after a theft.

Getting back into your usual routine once you’ve replaced what you can may help. But that doesn't always stop the niggling worry of it happening again.

There's no fixed timetable for putting the experience behind you, even when the practical problems are sorted.

What can help after tool theft?

Having someone help rearrange work, collect replacement tools or tackle paperwork can take some of the pressure off.

Talking about what happened with a friend, family member or someone who's experienced something similar can help. Even just getting the frustration off your chest may help.

If you find yourself worrying and it affects your sleep, concentration or everyday life, professional support is available.
