Builders' insurance news: Locally sourced materials can boost jobs, says report
Carefully selected locally-sourced materials can increase the energy efficiency of a building project and boost jobs in the construction industry, a new report has claimed.
The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment's report, titled Sustainable Supply Chains that Support Local Economic Development, looked into the benefits of using regionally produced clay blocks as part of a large housing scheme.
It found that doing so could benefit a local economy by over £1.1 million and create 40 new jobs, as well as being more environmentally friendly.
According to the report, the same regional approach could hold true for a range of other materials.
Following the announcement of the report's findings, the government said it was taking action to help minimise CO2 emissions in the construction industry.
A spokesperson for the Communities and Local Government department said: "The government is already taking action in terms of retrofitting existing buildings, improving future design standards and cutting red tape in the planning system for the installation of green energy solutions."
