The director of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has reminded people that large-scale home improvements should be left to those with the correct experience.

Such people are also likely to be in possession of tradesmens' public liability insurance.

Andrew Leech explained that professionals are experienced in works involving roofing, plumbing and electrical installations so the final result will be safer and of a higher standard that the average DIY attempt.

It is also a good idea to ensure that the professionals have the correct tradesmen public liability insurance in place to cover the cost of any potential problems.

He added: "There are certain things which the average DIY person can do without any problem at all, but if they are talking about major projects ... then really they should involve a professional."

Recent research by Saga revealed that one in ten over 50-year-olds have attempted major DIY projects on their homes, with 31 per cent injuring themselves as a result and three per cent actually requiring hospital treatment.
