Oil tank incident 'stresses need for public liability insurance'

A school and builder in Boston have been prosecuted for failing to take adequate precautions over work involving an oil tank.

Abeceder reports that a man was burned by laming sawdust while attempting to remove an oil tank from the St Bede's Catholic Science College in September 2007.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) havs now successfully prosecuted the independent school for failing to plan the work properly. R Harvey Builders, the employer of the injured man, admitted to not conducting a risk assessment at the site and were ordered to pay £1,000 plus costs by Skegness Magistrates court.

Nottingham HSE inspector Jo Anderson, who investigated the case, said: "If the school and the builders each knew what the other was doing, this incident would not have happened, and the worker would not have been injured."

The HSE recently revealed that there has been a decline in workplace deaths but construction companies should still ensure they have the correct public liability insurance policy in place.
